Winter-ing / 겨우살이

There is a small farm village -Sungam maeul- at the opposite side of Gyeonggi Creation Center, the residency I stayed last year. I’ve got some cabbages and other food stuffs from different people living in the village in return for my labor, on purpose of making lots of KImchi-one of the typical korean preserving food-for the winter time (we call it Kimjang). And I made Kimchi with the villagers. And I’ve also got some ‘rice’ from the villagers with the same way. At the exhibition, I served the rice and kimchi-korean symbolic dish-to the visitors.
'먹을 것을 구하는 행위'는 사실상 모든 직업의 근본적인 목적이라고 여겨지며, 원시적인 삶의 방식에서는 온 종일의 노동의 직접적인 이유이다. 당장 아무것도 만들어내지 못하는 비생산적인 것처럼 보이는 미술의 활동과 직접적인 먹을 것을 구하는 행위가 일치하도록 한다. 김장은 겨울철의 반양식이라는데 그 반양식과 나머지 반인 쌀을 구해서 밥과 김치라는 한국의 상징적인 밥상을 만든다. 경기 창작센터의 맞은편에 있는 선감마을에서 몇몇 집의 일들을 돕고 받은 김장재료들로 나의 김장을 담고 쌀도 같은 방법으로 구했다. 오픈스튜디오에 작업실에 방문한 사람들에게 밥과 김치를 먹고 갈 수 있게 했다.
