Identical Times

This work originated from my experience in Europe as a foreigner who was not familiar with the concept of ‘daylight saving times’. I was interested in the perception of time and the modern institution of ‘time in 24 identical lengths’. Using Barcelona’s plaza clock tower, a symbol of modernity, as a central point, I divided the city into 24 even segments. Each division line was assigned a number that corresponded with an hour of the clock. At the exact time, I ventured to the coordinating location and observed the images of the given place. Time was no longer a rule that evenly divided a single day, but instead became an indicator of direction. These two factors were combined to form a new perspective.
이 작업은 Daylight Saving Time이라는 제도가 생소한 외국인으로서 유럽에서 겪은 경험과 시간에 대한 감각에 기인한다. 우리가 일상적으로 접하는 24개의 시간, 동일한 길이로 나뉘어진 시간에 대한 보고서인 이 작업은, ‘시계탑이 있는 광장’과 ‘제로 포인트’라는 도시의 설정된 지점이 갖는 상징적 의미도 염두에 둔다. 그것을 바탕으로 제로 포인트를 중심으로 시간, 방위를 가리킬 때 쓰는 시간의 표현 그리고 시계라는 기계가 갖는 이미지 등을 생각하며, 특정 시간에 방위가 가리키는 그 시간에 매치된 장소를 제한적으로 관찰하며 묘사한 글들로 이루어진다.
